What is a "Custom Applicator"?

Custom applicators are individuals or companies with the equipment and expertise to assist with many operations on the acreage or small farm. (They may also be known as custom operators, or custom farm work.) Assistance from custom applicators can be provided, but is not limited to, the following areas:

Farm Custom Rates Part I reports on a survey of custom operations conducted to determine the current rates charged for specific machinery operations. Input averages include land tillage operations, planting and post planting operations, application of fertilizers, insect and weed control, and miscellaneous costs. This survey only covers spring and summer operations. The rates do not necessarily measure the full economic cost of performing the work specified.

Farm Custom Rates Part II reports on a survey of custom operations conducted to determine the current rates charged for specific machinery operations. Custom rates reported include charges for the use of necessary equipment, fuel and supplies such as baling wire or twine provided by the custom operator, and labor. Seed, fertilizer and chemical costs are not included.
